God doesn’t need you.
Okay, wow, I know I am starting off a little harsh, but I promise this gets better.
I was sitting at a church conference this week when that truth hit me. Not that I just heard it, but felt it. The speaker talked about how God is completely sufficient on His own. He doesn’t rely on us to complete Him, to fix anything, or to hold anything together. He is the Creator of the entire universe. The same One who painted the green grass beneath our feet and commands the crashing waves of the ocean.
And yet He wants us. That’s the part that stopped me in my tracks. Because if I’m being honest, I think a lot of us live like we have to earn our place. Like we need to prove we’re useful enough, good enough, faithful enough for God to keep us around. We put pressure on ourselves to “get it right,” thinking somehow we’re holding up our end of the deal.
But the truth is, there is no deal. God doesn’t need us to accomplish His will. He doesn’t need our strength, our perfection, or our carefully planned lives. And strangely enough, that’s not discouraging, it’s freeing.
Because if He doesn’t need us, that means His desire for us must be completely genuine. He wants us. Not for what we can do, but simply because He loves us.
Let that sink in for a moment.
The God who created the sky we stare at on quiet evenings, the One who knows every detail of this world and beyond, looks at you and says, “I want you.” Not a polished version of you. Not a “someday when you’ve figured it all out” version. Just you, right here, as you are. See, I told you this was going to get better.
There’s something incredibly humbling about realizing we’re not essential to God, and at the exact same time, we are deeply wanted by Him. It takes the pressure off needing to perform and replaces it with an invitation to simply be. To be known, to be loved, and to be in relationship with Him.
So no, God doesn’t need you. But He wants you. And honestly, that’s even better.
