Several of you have mentioned you’d like to see some of the recipes from last week’s Artifact of the Week (Henderson County Women’s Favorite Recipes and Weekly Recipe Service Cook book published in 1935 by the Stronghurst Graphic newspaper. See the January 7th Artifact of the Week). We’re happy to oblige. The 91-year recipes are in fact artifacts.
2 ½ cups flour
1 ½ cups sugar
½ cup butter
2 eggs
2 teaspoonsful baking powder
1 scant cup water
4 tablespoonsful burnt sugar
1 teaspoonsful vanilla
Cream sugar, burnt sugar, and vanilla; add egg yolks, then alternate flour and water until all flour is used but 1 tablespoonful. To this add baking powder and stiffly beaten egg whites. For burnt sugar, burn 1 cup of granulated sugar until the color of dark sorghum. Add 1 cup boiling water and stir until dissolved and the thickness of syrup.
1 gallon ripe tomatoes (cut fine and drain)
3 cups chopped celery
6 large onions
6 red peppers
2 tablespoonsful cinnamon
½ cup salt
2 ounces mustard seed
3 pints vinegar
2 pounds sugar
1 pint chopped horseradish
