There’s a certain feeling that arrives in an our small towns when the first real hint of spring shows up. You know the one. The snow has mostly melted, the sun hangs around a little longer in the evening, and for the first time in months the windows in the house can finally be opened.
After a long winter of heavy coats and boots by the door, that fresh air moving through the house feels like a gift.
The last couple of days my fiancé and I have been soaking it in. Like a lot of people around here, we’ve been taking advantage of the sunshine the best way we know how, and that’s by going for a walk. We’ve been out with our dog, strolling through the neighborhood with the sun on our faces, waving to neighbors doing the exact same thing.
That’s one of the quiet charms of small-town life. The moment the temperature creeps up and the wind settles down, everyone seems to emerge from their winter hibernation at once. Garage doors open. Kids ride bikes again.
People you haven’t seen since fall are suddenly walking past your house and giving you that familiar small-town wave.
It’s amazing what a few sunny days can do. After months of gray skies and icy sidewalks, a little warmth reminds us that brighter days really are coming. It brings a kind of simple joy. Just fresh air, longer evenings, and the feeling that life is waking back up again.
Of course, if you’ve lived in the Midwest long enough, you know better than to trust it completely. This time of year has a name around here and we all lovingly know it as: false spring.
It’s that brief stretch where we start thinking winter might finally be behind us, only to wake up a few days later to another cold snap or a surprise dusting of snow.
We all know we’re probably not out of the woods just yet. March still has a few tricks up its sleeve.
But that’s part of the deal when you live here. So for now, I will take the sunshine. I will enjoy the open windows while we can. Take in all the walks, the neighborly waves, and the warmth on my face.
Because in our small town, even a little preview of spring is something worth celebrating.
