Easter
Happenings

The Stronghurst area had their share of special programs surrounding Easter this past week.
At Maundy Thursday services, my pastor at the Presbyterian Church (Stronghurst and Media) Rev. John Deal along with Pastor Jim Olsen of the Bethel Lutheran and Raritan Reformed churches, joined together for a Seder meal which was a meal typical of The Lord's Last Supper, done in Jewish fashion. It was a time of learning for both young and old as 75 came together to enjoy the evening of food, blessing, and fellowship.
That evening, other churches in the area, also gave some interesting worship services that made one return home with much food for thought.
Good Friday services were held at noon at our church for the community, as it travels to a different church each year. I was told that the message, left on deep in thought, as they reflected on the happenings of Christ's crucifixion.
My grandson, Drew, and I attended the Raritan Reformed Evening Good Friday services which was assisted by Raritan Baptist Pastor Ralph Deming with Pastor Jim Olsen, in his final portrayal-during Lent - as he posed as Simon Peter.
Without notes, the pastor talked as if he were Peter, telling of how Jesus called him from fishing to being a disciple and fisher of men, and of all the miracles he saw Jesus perform.
He told how angry he was when Judas betrayed Christ and took him away, and yet how he sadly, had denied Jesus three times later that evening.
When the rooster crowed, he recalled what Christ had predicted, and he felt terrible and wept bitterly.
He told of the excitement when he heard Jesus had risen, and how he had appeared in their upper room even though it was locked because of the disciples fear of the Romans.
Hearing the gospel in this way, was almost like being there yourself as I felt the love Peter talked about. Peter said, even though he had failed, Christ still wanted him as his disciple.
I feel fortunate to have disciples in our churches who, like Peter, though they will err, they do not quit, but seek and accept forgiveness, and then continue on serving God in whatever way they can. Easter isn't so much about fasting - but it's believing and worshiping a God of great love and grace.
