Girl Scout Cookies

Move over Schwan's' Man because the girl scouts have added macadamia cookies to their list... yum!

They're called Aloha Chip!

Even though I love Schwan's macadamia cookies with white chocolate chunks, the girl scout cookies are already baked, so you get right to the eating!

Thin mints are still their top sellers, not only because they are s-o-o-o g-o-o-o-d, but also because there are forty in a box!

My little brownie scout reminded me that they are good right from the freezer, so you can buy more than one box!

Cookies are $3.00 a box of which 30 cents goes to their local troop I'm told by the Shining Trails Council that it is called each girls "Cookie Dough." and she can spend it however they decide - on events, camp, shopping at the scout store.

Thirty cents may not sound like much, but these little salesgirls enjoy cookies and they enjoy making money and making you happy and they know cookies make everyone feel better.

It's also a way to help girls learn about earning part of their way in scouting fun and goal setting and leadership skills. A shining council mother told me that her daughter looked forward to visiting all the neighborhood to sell cookies each year, even the few that couldn't buy, she always stopped to ask and visit with again.

I must say, these salesgirls are good at what they do: smiling, looking cute, and then describing the delicious cookies...... then they got ya. This is when the 30 cents begins to add up.

My granddaughter has already sold a lot of boxes thanks to her friends and those many friends of her mom's and dad's.

I like the Samoas myself with chocolate, coconut and gooey caramel... those are yummy, too.

But besides

Aloha Chip, Thin Mints, and Samoas, they also have

Lemon Drop, Trefoils (shortbread), Do-Si-Dos (oatmeal peanut butter creams), and

Tagalongs (tasty cookies topped with peanut butter and a luscious chocolaty coating), and for you weight-conscious people there is the Reduced Fat Apple Cinnamon.

The girl scout cookie sale started January 19th and ended Sunday, Feb. 4th, but they always order extras so you can get some from girl scout leaders in your area during delivery days or at their booth sales.

These scouts work hard for their dough. Not only do they sell each box but deliver each box and collect the money, then turn it into their scout leader. But they love it, mostly because they love being active in their community.

If you are wondering what girl scouts do, for starters, I've seen the brownies baking, sewing, and last week making crafts. They were painting little hearts for gifts. In La Harpe, yearly the girls have a girl scout baby they shower with gifts at a reception.

They learn respect for their country, its flag, their community, and their families, and they learn to make wise decisions.

If you see a young girl, ask her if she is a scout and have her tell you about it.

Our youth are our future and scouting will help shape that future in a positive way

Fifty-six percent of cookie sales go for girl program, adult development, property maintenance (camp), financial aide for scouts needing help for camp etc, 28% of the $3.00 goes for the cost of the product, 14% is troop proceeds (the 30 cents), and 2% is administrative costs.

In Henderson County there are 110 girls active in girl scouts in Union and Southern from Kindergarten to Seniors which is also supported by an annual fund drive and the United Way.

Now, don't those Girl Scout cookies sound like the best bargain in town. See a scout leader for more details.
