Henderson County is almost down to the wire in receiving a $250,000 library grant from the state, but one thing is still needed before it is official, the signature of approval from Jesse White, Secretary of State and our State Librarian.

The first "Friends Of The Library" organizational meeting was Monday at 7 pm in Biggsville,

Fourteen citizens came together to vote for officers of this much needed club.

It is needed, because a $250,000 grant and the $250,000 funds in savings will not be enough to cover the library's total cost of nearly $900,000.

Around $400,000 will be loaned to the library from the First State Bank of Biggsville, but that still leaves the need for new shelving, study tables, user screens, and a long list of many things to equip the new county library.

Bill Leonard of Biggsville, a retired Admiral employee, has stepped forward to form a Friends Of The Library support group.

Most of his life, he lived in the center of Henderson County near Biggsville. He drove the bookmobile, and in the early years the library was in his mother's store, a cream business.

He will do whatever it takes to support the library, he said. The members at the meeting felt he would be a good candidate to vote in as Chairman of the committee. Several other selections were made and will be announced as they are approved.

It was voted to open a bank account in Biggsville for membership dues and donations to Friends Of The Library.

Ray Boyer said the Biggsville Lions Club have voted to give all the proceeds of their soup supper March 4th to the Friends Of The Library.

A membership drive is being organized to encourage support of the library.

It is hoped that the whole community will join to make a small amount from each of us grow into a lot. Students are $2.50, Individual- $5.00, and Family $10.00, and other special categories for larger amounts:

Friend-$25 to $49

Sponsor -$50 to $99

Patron $100 and over.

Any amount of money can be donated above these amount, and memorials can be given.

There's a lot of planning to be done, so come and join the group to help a worthy cause.

The group needs volunteers to help solicit members. If you will help, call Bill Leonard, or come to the next meeting February 28th at 7 p.m. at the Biggsville Community Building.

How about it? Are you friend or foe? If you are a friend, join our small group and be involved in the first major county project in 2000.

Together we can make a difference.
