Aunt Polly

Hello folks,

My grandpa said my 5-times great grandfather died in 1781 at Yorktown, Virginia fighting for our independence. It was the last major battle of the Revolutionary War, led by Commanding General of the Continental Army George Washington. His combined force led by him, and Gilbert Du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, and French Army troops led by Comte de Rochambeau resulted in the surrender of British Commander LT Gen. Charles Cornwallis. That day, Americans and 8,500 French troops totaled 17,500 fighting 9,000 British and Germans.

Washington had 88 of his troops die and 300 wounded, which was nearly 1/4th of the British casualties, but Washington's troops knew what it was to live under fear and had fled Eastern Europe to gain independence and freedom.

Memorial Day is a day to remember. I take along any young ones that I can to the cemetery to pay our respect and to teach what America means that ordinary people will go into battle and die.

I hope you take family and youngsters too. We must teach that what our forefathers have given to us, we must protect, so it is not lost. If we teach them, our young ones will carry on the strength of our forefathers. We must do what we can, too. See you in church.

-Love, Aunt Polly
