Smithshire Post Office Plans Town Meeting

The United States Postal Service proposes to close the Smithshire Post Office. A notice will be posted in the post office and form letters will be sent to all customers as the first step, under law, that the U.S. Postal Service must take prior to closing or consolidating a post office.

This notice must be given 60 days prior to a final decision on the matter to allow customers time for local customers of the post office to evaluate the proposal and offer comments.

Postal officials are required by law to schedule a public meeting with customers of the post office proposed for closing. Locally this meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. at Liberty Hall in Smithshire. Local citizens of the Smithshire Post Office should seriously consider the consequences of the U.S. Postal Services proposal and be prepared to voice their concern at the October 6 meeting.

Only the citizens of the community may take action to prevent the closing of their post office. Once a post office has been closed there is very little chance of getting it back again. Contact Gertrude Davis (309) 325-7125 if you have questions.
