West Central Seats 3 New Members, Honors Three

At a special meeting of the West Central School District Board of Education Tuesday, May 3rd, President Brent reviewed the results of the April 5, 2011 consolidated election and indicated that Roberta Robbins, Amy John, and Jodi Arnold were the top three vote getters and therefore should be seated on the West Central CUSD #235 Board of Education with terms expiring in 2015.

The board approved the canvassed election results as presented and President Brent administered the Oath of Office to each of the incoming board members.

Board President Brent presented each outgoing board member with a plaque of appreciation for their years of service.

Board member Mark Torrance was recognized for 6 years of service and Board members Doug Sams and Brian Clark were recognized for 4 years of service as a West Central CUSD #235 board member.

The special meeting of the West Central CUSD #235 Board of Education was adjourned sine die.

After a brief break, Dr. Robbins, Mrs. John and Mrs. Arnold joined the Board at the Board Table.

Superintendent Grimm asked for permission to serve as President Pro Tem of the West Central District #235 Board of Education's reorganization meeting. The board members by consensus gave Superintendent Grimm permission to proceed.

The meeting was then called to order at 7:07 p.m. and roll call was taken where all board members were present.

Superintendent Grimm opened the floor for nominations for the election of a Board President. Dr. Lonnie Brent being the only candidate nominated for the office of president was then declared elected by acclamation.

Board President Brent conducted the nomination for and election of Board Vice President. Nominated for this position were Dr. Roberta Robbins and Mr. Brad Arnold. By receiving a majority of the votes cast, Mr. Brad Arnold was elected vice president of the board of education.

President Brent then conducted the nomination for and election of Board Secretary. Two board members were nominated for this position, Mr. Paul Anderson and Mrs. Jodi Arnold. By receiving a majority of the votes cast, Mr. Paul Anderson was elected secretary of the board of education.

The board approved Sharri Richard as the district treasurer and board's recording secretary.

The board approved a proposed list of meeting dates, times and places, a copy of which is attached to this document via email.

The board approved the formation of four board sub-committees. These four sub-committees are Transportation, Building & Grounds, Policy, and an ad-hoc committee for negotiations. During this portion of the agenda, there was some discussion as to whether or not former Board Member Mark Torrance should continue serving on the negotiations committee on behalf of the board. While some members felt that this might cause some concern, the majority of the board felt quite comfortable with allowing Mr. Torrance to continue in this role with the knowledge that the current 7 board members give final approval to any subsequent negotiated agreement.

President Brent appointed the following members to these sub-committees:

The board was informed by President Brent that he felt it necessary to have a special board meeting on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 4 p.m. for purposes of discussing matters pertaining to collective bargaining. The board members agreed by consensus that this time will work for them. The board was then reminded that the next regular meeting will be on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 7 p.m. in the elementary cafeteria.

Before adjourning Dr. Robbins wanted to formally thank the teachers and staff for their hard work and recognize them for National Teacher's Day. President Brent also reported that Supt. Grimm and he had spent the day in Springfield meeting with 4 Illinois Congressmen regarding the financial status of education in Illinois. The board was also reminded that US Congressman Bobby Shilling will be in the West Central School district on Friday, May 6th to tour the district. While in the District, Congressman Schilling is expected to meet our board members, visit a government class, discuss the highway 34 project and visit with a representative from the early childhood center.

The board adjourned their meeting at approximately 7:43 p.m.
