La Harpe District February Meeting

The Board of Education of La Harpe Community School District #347 held a rescheduled regular meeting February 22, 2011 in the school district library.

Board members in attendance were President Cindy Wear, Vice President Dan Horton, Rex Huston, Mark Irish, Darren Spangler, and Deanna Stambaugh.

Also present were Superintendent Jo Campbell and board secretary Jeanne Clayton, Principal Lila Mc Keown, board treasurer Karen Nudd, David Pistorius of First Midstate, Bob Huff and Dan Johnson of Huff Architectural.

Superintendent Campbell gave the financial report and presented district bills mentioning the $400,000 received for 2011 from Johnson Estate, which was up from $340,000 received in 2010 and approximately $211,000 in 2009. These funds received around February 15 each year are reflected in March totals.

Superintendent Campbell reported on a recent meeting on the competitive Pre-K Grant process and discussed the governor's budget.

Superintendent Campbell will be attending the IASA Board of Director's meeting in Springfield.

Superintendent Campbell reported on Senator Sullivan's submission to the education committee of a legislative "fix" regarding the recently adopted language regarding school construction grants and reorganized districts.

Principal MeKeown reported on junior high sports.

Spelling bee winner Tonya Hood will represent La Harpe at the county spelling bee and runner up Chloe Ravenscraft.

McKeown reported approximately $4,500 raised during Jump Rope for Heart for the Heart Association

Announced ISAT testing would be later due to snow days and the most recent teacher in-service was held on "Explosive Child" and "Wellness".

The board agreed to continue the Coop Athletic Agreement with Dallas ESD #327, resolved to abate the working cash fund to the amount of $183,492.44, and to issue 2.5 million in general obligation bonds (2.165 in HLS bonds and 335,000 in working cash bonds) to fund the Health Life Safety Amendment work beginning in May.

The board accepted bids for windows and glazing and mechanical parts of the project.

The plumbing bid was rejected and will be revised and rebid. The board will continue to accept bids for the remaining work in the coming months.

Due to the renovation project, La Harpe Preschool through 8th grade will start school on September 6, 2011, 10 days later than Illini West which will start on Aug. 23, 2011. La Harpe Preschool-8th grade students will attend school 10 days beyond the last high school day in May.
