Meet Your Neighbor

by Jenna Clayton Quill Reporter

Meet your neighbor Greg Hoener, son of Bud and Sue Hoener.

He was born in Quincy, was raised on his family's farm in the suburbs of Sutter, Illinois with his siblings Doug and Tammy.

He graduated from Warsaw High School in 1984 and then from Culver Stockton College in 1989 where he majored in education, played basketball and also met his wife Kathy.

Hoener and his wife have four children; Michael, Greg Jr., Thomas, and Amber.

Hoener is currently the American and World History teacher at Illini West.

At school Hoener is the sponsor of the "Git R Done"/History Club. He goes to the Federated Church of Lima where he is a board member and is a volunteer fireman for the Lima district.

He coaches and works with the local youth with the Rockford Softball association and coaches fifth and sixth grade girls basketball at Warsaw where he previously coached the fifth and sixth grade boys for over 10 years.

Hoener previously worked with At-Risk Students in Northeast Missouri and West Central Illinois.

Hoener has lived in the Warsaw area his entire life but has traveled through the United States and explains, "I know of no other place I would want to be.

Our area has consistently had some of the best young people I've ever known of. I know everyone has ups and downs but the young people of this area have always been the best in my opinion."

Hoener enjoys hunting, fishing, wood working, rebuilding old Ford 4x4s, working on his farm, but first and foremost he loves being with his family.

The greatest memories in Hoener's life are when he met his wife and of course the births of his children. He, "thanks God every day for what he has given me."

He is very popular with his students and is known for his quirky, hilarious manner but also for his effectiveness at teaching.

Students who have had him in class will find many familiar sayings and quotes repeated to them time and time again.

One of his favorite things to say to his students is, "I expect the best out of the best and you are the best, so I expect nothing less".
