The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
By Coach Will Bavery
The West Central Football team defeated the Galva Wildcats 42 to 12 for their first win ever.
The Heat used a much improved defense to hold the Wildcats at bay, while the offense continued to score points. Coming away from the United game it was obvious that we needed to make some defensive adjustments. We tried to put some players into positions where they could make some big plays.
We got some big defensive plays from Abe Chockley, Jerry Morris, and Dan Crum. We also had some other players like James Spiker step up and show that they can play. We are still not to the point where I want the defense, and we'll need to make more adjustments this week to play with a fine Princeville team.
The Heat offense got the scoring started in the first quarter when Darick Clark hit Andy Chockley with a 34 yard scoring pass. The conversion was batted down, and the Heat lead 6-0.
Just a few minutes into the second quarter Abe Chockley broke a 39 yard run for a touchdown. The conversion pass was good from Darick Clark to Andy Chockley. Four minutes later Adam Corzatt hit Andy Chockley with a 55 yard scoring pass, and Darick Clark added the conversion.
The final scoring play of the first half took place with five seconds to go. Adam Corzatt on a scramble heaved the ball about fifty yards in the air into the hands of Calvin Covert. Calvin caught the ball and hot footed it into the endzone for a 69 yard scoring play. Darick Clark again added the conversion on a run. The Heat went to halftime break with a 30-0 score.
In the second half Aaron Landers scored on a one yard run to make the score 36-0. I didn't want the score to mount too quickly so we went for a one point conversion kick. Our conversion kick game was not very impressive and needs lots of work. After that we seemed to lose the focus we had shown earlier in the game. Much of the cause of the loss of focus was my fault, as I was trying to get different groups into the game and some things happened that I hadn't counted on.
Galva picked up two scores a minute apart to make the score 36 to 12. The offense got us back online when Abe Chockley scored his second touchdown of the game on a 16 yard run. The conversion was no good and the final score would be 42 to 12.
Again, I was really pleased with the offensive line play of Josh Harkness, Brad Buss, and Cody Lane as they opened up two middle touchdowns. Our learning of the game is coming, and we will need another good week of progress to compete with our next opponent, Princeville. Princeville is big and tough. I think they may be the toughest opponent that we have on our schedule.
The team and I appreciate all the fans that traveled to Galva to support us. We hope we can have the same support this week in Princeville, as we are really going to need everything in place to stop the Princes.
