Moment In History

Murder Trials & Civil Litigation: In 1883 William Diver, a deaf mute living near Lomax, attempted to murder his sister-in-law, the widow of a deceased brother, with a hand-ax.

The motive for the crime was that he wanted her to marry him, which she refused to do. The woman made quite a struggle for her life and her screams attracted some men working on the section nearby.

They came to her assistance. Diver then cut his throat and hit himself on the head with the ax, fracturing his skull; he died almost immediately.
