Letter to Editor

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter to respond to Helen Ryan's letter. The YMCA in Burlington, IA, sponsors the football programs that you wrote about.

Each parent pays a fee for their child to play and the Y issues them equipment.

I do agree with you that learning is essential for the young children's future. I do not believe that the program is interfering with my son's education.

Games are on Saturday afternoon and the team practices for one hour during the school week. The boys seem to be having fun and everyone gets to play.

They are also learning to function as members of a team and not just as an individual athlete. I believe this also is important for the boys as they can use these skills for many years.
