The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
Below are the HEAT Seniors which was taken at the first of the year.
Oneida:A & R's (AlWood/ROWVA) dominating defensive line coupled with the punishing running of their big fullback was just too much for the Heat to handle last Friday. The Heat running game just couldn't get untracked as the A & R defensive line kept us bottled up.
Against our defense the A & R attack was relentless with the running of the big fullback, who accounted for 194 yards on 23 carries, and with the nifty running of their quarterback, who had 78 yards on 13 carries.
A & R scored on their first possession with a 49 yard run by the quarterback. The conversion was no good. The score stood at 6-0 until 3:15 to go before halftime when the Bulldogs made it 14-0. The next 20 seconds proved to be the worst of the game for the Heat. A Heat dropped ball recovered by the Bulldogs coupled with an uncovered receiver on the following play made the score 22-0 at halftime.
The Heat did show some moxie in the second half and stopped A & R on their first possession. The Heat moved the ball a little with the pass and finally broke Andy Chockley loose on a 37 yard run to the one yard line. Andy went out of the game on the play with a hurt leg.
Darick Clark told me he could get the yardage needed on the dive play, so Darick limped onto the field and accomplished the task. The conversion play was stifled, but the Heat had moved back into the ballgame at 22-6. On the next defensive stand Jerry Morris continued his night of really tough defensive play by ripping the ball away from the A & R ball carrier. Jerry is well on his way to the endzone when one of the officials decides it is time for an inadvertent whistle which will deny Jerry the score. We are given the ball back where Jerry took the ball away.
On the next play our luck stays consistent as we fumble the ball back to the Bulldogs. That sequence of plays with only four minutes remaining in the third quarter kept the score from being 22 to 12, and the Heat being back in the game big time. As it turned out the Bulldogs drove the ball in to make it 30-6. The Heat were never able to mount any offensive threat and A & R tacked on another score to make the final 37-6.
I was pleased with the way the kids hung in and made a game of it in the third quarter. It would have been very easy for them to have folded their tents and be forty pointed by a very good ball team. They didn't give in though and went the distance.
This week the Heat have their backs against the wall if they have any hopes of making the playoffs. They must win against the always tough Stark County Rebels. The Heat will be playing their final senior home game and I got a feeling that the fans will be treated to another really good football game.
