West Central's first homecoming week was topped off last Friday evening with a 30 to 14 win over the Annawan Braves.
The Heat went away from the passing game and used a strong running game to roll up 320 yards on the ground. The strong ground game accounted for three touchdowns and three extra points.
Andy Chockley picked up a 1 yard touchdown run, and Abe Chockley scored on runs of one and 55 yards. Andy Chockley tacked on two of the conversion runs, and brother Abe added the third.
Darick Clark added the Heat's final touchdown on a play that the officials ruled wrongly. With the Heat punting, the Annawan punt receiver muffed the catch and the ball bounced directly into the hands of Darick who ran the ball 34 yards into the end zone. The correct ruling would have been Heat ball at the spot where Darick got possession of the ball.
I guess everything balanced out because earlier in the game a touchdown was taken away by the officials when they ruled Darick had not crossed the goal line before he fumbled the ball. This was truly a case where the officials taketh and giveth.
The Heat fell behind early in the game when Annawan scored on their first possession. Behind the power running of the Chockley brothers and Darick Clark, the Heat came right back down the field to take an 8-6 lead. The Heat would take that lead into halftime. The Heat quickly upped the lead when Abe Chockley scored from 55 yards out on the first play of the second half.
The Heat continues to improve in their level of play. I was really pleased with the blocking of Brice Jack at the guard position. Brice was really coming off of the ball and delivering the hits. If we can step everyone's line play to the level that Brice had Friday night, we will be tough to handle.
It was also good to get Tanner Hartman back from his hand injury. The "Tator" gives us another quality crossback runner and strengthens our secondary corps.
This week the Heat travel to Oneida to take on Allwood Wrova. This game has playoff implications as both teams have now moved into contention for playoff spots. We will need the same big crowd support this Friday at Oneida that we were given Friday evening. I think the people that make the trip will be rewarded with a good football game.
