Civil War-83rd Illinois Infantry (continued) In 1864 Generals Wheeler and Forrest of the Confederate Army were making daring efforts to sever Sherman's communications, the 83rd formed a part of the efficient force employed by General Rousseau in driving those rebels from Tennessee.
In the winter of 1865-65 the regiment went to Nashville on provost duty and on June 26th was mustered out there.
They arrived in Chicago on the 30th where they were paid and disbanded. Of the 1,50 men who went to the field, 640 returned.
