This letter is guaranteed to go over like a lead balloon or a pregnant pole vaulter, since "Bush Bashing" seems to be the thing to do these days.
In 2003, 70 percent described our president as "honest and trustworthy". Now three years later, only 40 percent describe him the same way. Many seem to think he has completely changed, which some of us can't buy. It is like Joe Paterno, the Penn State football coach, in reverse. He was a lousy coach and needed to retire when he was losing a lot of games. Now, when he has had very good recruiting, he has suddenly become a brilliant coach and his team is ranked fourth in the nation.
Many continue to say the big thing in the Bush years, is no weapons of mass destruction have been found. What were those chemical gases Hussein used in torturing hundreds of thousands of his own people? Since enough biological weapons (microscopic germs) to destroy a country can be put in a small vial, is it inconceivable that they could have been buried?
Of course former presidents, most top Democrats and everyone and their dog also believed there were W.M.D.'s , but is it still all Bush's fault?
Undoubtedly, our leadership has made mistakes, just as every administration has. A typical example is the federal response to Hurricane Katrina (some would say it is all our president's fault).
We need some scapegoat for all of our problems, and states themselves need to have some responsibility.
The big question during our president's tenure is why and how did the Iraq war happen? As you will recall, we lost about 3000 innocent people in the 9/11 attacks. Since Afghanistan provided a haven for those who ordered the 9/11 attack, we first went there. The terrorist cancer seemed to spread to Iraq as we went there and took out Hussein and most of the top terrorists in his regime.
Terrorists are like white blood cells going to the site of infection and they definitely want to be where democracy may take over.
A former Clinton advisor, Dick Morris, thinks we will be out of Iraq in a year, but it would be unwise to divulge our strategy to the terrorists.
We have lost over 2000 brave, dedicated young people who have volunteered to serve our country. Most of them have more "guts" in their little toe than the rest of us have in our bodies. They deserve all the support we can give them. Not to downplay their sacrifices, but to put it in perspective unfortunately more young people in the same age group are killed annually in booze-related deaths.
As you know, President Bush has said it is better to fight terrorists elsewhere, rather than in the U.S. It is apparent that our president has established a very strong homeland security system against terrorism.
While there have been serious terrorist attacks in such places as Spain, England and France, they have learned to not mess with the U.S.
Don't you think our president deserves some support and credit?
