The La Harpe School board held a regular meeting Tuesday night, November 15th, in the school district library.
School board members in attendance were, Barbara Cox, Dan Horton, Nancy Butler, Mark Irish, Cindy Wear, R. D. Trout, and Ricky Johnson. Also present were Jo Campbell, Pat Dietrich, and Jim Rich from Carl Sandburg College.
Mr. Rich gave an update on the EduNet project which is designed for the purpose of transmitting/receiving data, Internet, audio, and video traffic. The main applications of the network currently are interactive distance learning, high-speed Internet access, WebCT hosting, and educational cable TV programs.
Future applications will include application hosting, teacher raining and certification, data bureau services, voice-over IP and much more.
The board accepted with regret the resignation of Jennifer Reische as a teacher aide.
The board also approved paying Tim Lafferty a $500 stipend for driving the school bus for football practice in Sciota during the 2005 season, approved the FY2006 District Risk Management Plan with necessary revisions, approved a request by Larry Cortelyou for use of the cafeteria and music room, and approved a request from Tim Lafferty for reimbursement for a college course, EUDC659-Leading to Make a Difference.
JH/HS Principal Lila McKeown included in her report that boys and girls basketball are under way.
Meet the Cyclones (girls) was Tuesday, November 15th and Meet the Cyclones (boys) will be Friday, November 18th at Sciota.
Michelle Kornegay and Jenna Ourth are on the dance squad.
There are 17 participants in high school scholastic bowl. The participated in the Academic Challenge on Tuesday, November 8th.
The National Honor Society worked at Rogers Haunted Corn Maze during the Halloween weekend.
Mrs. Mencel took a group of choir students to the West Central Choir Festival on November 1st at WIU.
Red Ribbon Week activities were held the week of October. 24th.
Juniors took the ASVAB test on Tuesday, October 25. We had a good turnout of parents at the Parent/Teacher conferences which were held on October 27th and 28th.
The students really enjoyed the annual Pumpkin Derby which was held October 31st in the high school gym.
Sophomores took the PLAN test on November 2nd.
Junior High Report
The 5th and 6th grade girls basketball have finished their season. The 7th and 8th girls basketball are getting ready for Regionals. The 7th grade team won the Sand Valley Tournament.
The 7th and 8th grade boys basketball is underway.
The Junior High participated in Red Ribbon activities by dressing up during the week of October 24th.
The fall dance was held on Thursday, October 27th. Mrs. Dittmer is in charge of the student council this year.
FFA REPORT
Thirteen FFA members from La Harpe and 4 from West Prairie along with Mr. and Mrs. Mealiff attended the National FFA Convention in Louisville, KY. The convention will be moved to Indianapolis for the next seven years.
Those members attending from La Harpe included: Shelby Bartlett, Alex Bundy, Lindsey Pollock, Tanieka Rodeffer, Kaela Covert, Alex Irish, Kyle Magee, Mariah Myers, Shane Painter, Jazmyn Passmore, Dillon Pollock, Derek Van Fleet, and Cody Wear. It was an educational and busy 4 days.
Most of the students in the Basic Ag I class are constructing wood projects in the shop while the Ag Machinery and Electricity students have just finished electrical wiring and have started welding exercises.
Students in the Landscaping and Greenhouse Management class are working in pairs to present various aspects of landscaping.
Several of the 8th and 9th grade students are preparing for the FFA Quiz Bowl which will be held at Southeastern High School on Thursday, November 17th.
Fruit and Calendar Sales
Our annual Fruit and Calendar Sales starts November 17th and the Section Crop Judging CDE will be held on December 14th at Nauvoo-Colusa High School, and the fruit is scheduled to arrive for distribution on December 13th.
