Civil War: 83rd Illinois Infantry- The Eighty-third Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry had among its number a great many Henderson County boys among them being John A. Gordon, Hugh M. Allison (formerly of Strong-hurst but later of Monmouth), Joseph Thompson and Lee M. Shaw of Dallas City.
The Regiment was organized at Monmouth in 1862 by Col. Abner Harding and sworn into service leaving shortly for Burlington onto St.Louis, Cairo and then to Fort Henry.
