Moment in History

In 1882 Alexander Smith was the manager of the Henderson County Poor Farm and Jail.

He was born in Kentucky in 1846 and came with his widowed mother and brother Charles to Illinois in 1849. The family settled on a farm about four miles southeast of Oquawka.

In 1864 he enlisted in Co.F, 16th Ill. Vol. Infantry and was honorably discharged at Springfield in 1865.

He became a farmer and married Miss Eliza M. Jackson and they had one child, Ralph. He took control of the county farm and jail in 1879.
