Business Focus- Sharpe Finishes

by Judy Swanson, Quill Staff

Ted Sharpe, owner of Sharpe Finishes, has been restoring furniture for over 20 years. The first piece of furniture he restored was an antique kitchen cabinet, dating around 1890, that belonged to his grandmother Sharpe. It was in his parent's basement so he decided to give it a try. That was all it took to get him interested.

He worked part time out of his home for 20 years. Two years ago he decided to go full time and moved his business to a building at 101 E. Main Street, in La Harpe.

He does restoration of antiques, and trunks. He can do minor repairs as well. He refinishes kitchen cabinets, staircases, and woodwork, restoring them to their original condition. Ted said his clients come from West Central Illinois, Southeast Iowa, and Northeast Missouri.

Ted has lived almost his entire life in La Harpe. He and his wife, Teri, recently celebrated their 30 anniversary. They have three children, Melanie, Jack, and Tyler.

Ted also has Sharpe Weather Station. He took it over 2 years ago from his father, Jack, after he had done it for over 50 years. Ted records the temperature and precipitation each day and sends it into the National Weather Services in Davenport, Iowa. He also reports his findings to the Quill each week.

Ted enjoys working with the youth at his church and golfing.
