Moment In History

John Pence son of John Pence who built Pence's Fort, was born near Oquawka in 1830 and is believed to be the first white child born within the bounds of Henderson County.

His playmate were Indian children and his education was meager. In March 1850 he went to California where he remained until 1859 and then returning to Oquawka.

During the Civil War he volunteered for Co.D, 7th Mo. Cavalry and after 18 months of warfare he was wounded and taken prisoner by Quantrell's band (notorious bushwackers known to be brutal).

He was paroled after swearing never to fight against the C.S.A. again. In 1862 he married Miss Mary Chapin.
