Board Approves Cost Sharing

The Southern board approved an agreement with Union for sharing the cost of mailings, publications, etc pertaining to consolidation. The agreement states the two school districts shall share equally in all reasonable costs incurred in connection with the pending reorganization.
States Attorney Ray Cavanaugh explained the 1% public safety sales tax issue which will be voted on in April to the board during public comment.
The board approved the high school boys and girls track budget in the amount of $2909.
High School Principal Dale Buss reported:
- Fishers Jack & Jill offered each of the elementary students with perfect attendance a free movie rental as an award.
- Kyle Keever, Alicia Phillips, Alica Yeakey advanced to Speech Sectionals and did well.
- Brittany Fox did well in the IHSA 3 Point shot contest.
- Those recognized for exceeding State Standard on the Prairie State test included: Caleb Hoskins-Reading; Ben Jacobs-Social Science; Chad Kaup-Reading; Curt Mayer-Science; Kim Plath-Reading, Writing, Science; Anne Pogue-Reading Science; Chris Wilson-Reading, Writing, Math, science, Social Studies and Kyle Wood-Reading.
- Andrew Linder won the regional 3 point shootout and advances to the sectionals.
- Academic Challenge results included: Curtis Mayer-1st in computer; Chad Kaup-2nd in computers and 3rd in Physics; and Chase Heap and Ben Jacob-3rd in Engineering.
Jr. High Principal Jeff Nichols reported:
- Congratulated Coach Harig, Coach Shaner and they boys in basketball
- Class trips:
5th grade to IMAX in Quad Cities
6th grade to Wild Life Prairie Park
7th grade to Hannibal, MO
8th grade to Chicago on May 20th.
- 7th grade volleyball regional begins March 1st at Industry
- 8th grade volleyball regional begins March 8th at Industry, Southern plays at 7 p.m. on March 9th.
- Scholastic Bowl meets will begin in March at Yorkwood. They have 10 meets plus the regional. 13 students are signed up.
- Sixth grader Amanda Schneider placed 2nd in the County Spelling Bee.
- Amanda Schneider has been selected as a Student Ambassador in the People To People program. She will be traveling in England and Scotland in June and July.
The board entered closed session at 7:40 p.m. for the purpose of personnel issues.
Following closed session the board:
- Hired Marty Harig as high school track coach
- Accepted the resignation of Dan Murphy effective at the end of the school year
- Offered early retirement incentive to match Union, tenured teachers only
