Kameron Miller, an attorney from Carthage has been appointed the new Hancock County Public Defender.
The Hancock County Board voted for Miller at their meeting, Tuesday, June 21. Miller started his new position June 23.
The Public Defender is a lawyer appointed for people charged with criminal offenses who cannot afford other lawyers.
In Hancock County there are approximately 250 Felony and 500 misdemeanor cases filed annually. The Public Defender handles a large share of those cases.
Miller brings 21 years experience to the position, having previously served Hancock County as an Assistant State's Attorney. Miller was also an Assistant State's Attorney in Macon County.
He has his own law office in Carthage, where he has practiced criminal defense since 1995. While in law school, he was an intern with the Oklahoma County Public Defender's Office at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Kameron and his wife Jody have a son Kyle, a daughter Katy, and has lived in Carthage for 15 years. He is a member of the Carthage Clipper Fire Department and Secretary for the Hancock County Gun Club.
The former Public Defender, Nicholas Literski, of Nauvoo, resigned to pursue a private business interest.
