Meet Your Neighbor

By Jennifer Dance, Quill Staff

Meet your neighbor, Mary Lee Taylor. Mary Lee lives in rural Media with her husband Earl. She graduated from Media High School in 1946 and then went to Western Illinois University to become a teacher.

Her first teaching job was in Bald Bluff where she taught eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse. Four of her students were Earl's brothers and sisters and they met at the first Bald Bluff PTA meeting. The two were wed on December 27, 1951.

Her second job was at Media School in 1951. She continued there until 1954 when their son Craig was born. Debbie (Gillam) followed 13 months later in 1955.

Mary Lee took some time off work to spend raising their children and began teaching again in 1962 in Smithshire for 2 years. She later worked at the Post Office in Media from 1979 until her retirement in 1992.

Mary Lee enjoys working in her flower beds and garden. She has been a member of the Presbyterian Church in Media since she was 16.

She started a new hobby of stamping this past winter, enjoys making quilts for her family and loves to read. Mary Lee also belongs to the Red Hat Society, the Purple Misfits Chapter.

Mrs. Taylor has 6 grandchildren, Wendy (Tracy) Ell, Brent Kennedy; Jade, Paige and Jace Taylor; and Julianna Gillam; and 3 great-grandchildren, Alec, Christian, and Rhoan Ell. She is a great neighbor and makes great strawberry-rhubarb pie!
