10th Illinois Infantry (continued): Gen. Prentiss obtained authority from Washington to reorganize the six regiments and this was mustered in on the 29th for three years with Morgan as colonel.

Several months saw recruiting of the ranks; Charles S. Cowan of Oquawka at once began raising a company.

He was selected captain with Samuel J. Wilson as first lieutenant and Collin McKenney as second lieutenant.

Taking the C.B.& Q. at Sagetown, the 79 enlisted men went to Mendota and from there to Cairo where they were sworn into U.S. service by Col. R.J. Oglesby.
