The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
Dear Editor,
In response to the letters to the editor in the July 20th edition of The Quill, we as members of the La Harpe Park District Board of Commissioners would like to make the following reply:
In an effort to provide the best, safest and most satisfactory experience for those who are patronizing the La Harpe Park District pool, we have attempted to make sure that adequate staff is available at all times that the pool is open for public use, and for use for pool parties, etc.
There are times, and this pool season is a case in point, when, despite our best efforts to provide a facility that meets the needs of all individuals in the community and visitors hereto, there are at times issues that may leave some pool users dissatisfied.
It has been the case this pool season that, despite the best efforts and intentions of the Park District and the staff and management of the pool, there have been times when there has not been enough staff available during some pool hours to ensure the safety and well being of those who want to use the facility.
The only option is to choose to close the pool during those times, rather than place those wanting to use the pool in jeopardy due to short staffing.
As liability is always an issue at such facilities, this is often the only sensible option available. All staff members hired were employed based on their qualifications and experience, and selections were made carefully from among those who applied. The only alternative to this practice is that, when staff is not available, the pool be closed for the entire season, an option that nobody concerned wants to see exercised.
As far as maintenance of the pool is concerned, this year there have been many issues to be addressed, and those improvements and repairs are being completed as soon as is possible, while keeping the pool open for public use.
It is the desire of the La Harpe Park District Board that any concerns that citizens have in regard to the pool be directed to the board directly, so understanding can be reached without rancor. Any constructive input will be considered from any and all who may wish to register their concerns.
The board has been grateful for the direct input that we have received this year, prior to the pool opening, and we remain open and receptive to constructive input.
