Moment In History

Civil War-10th Illinois Infantry: At Cairo, Dallum's little party was the nucleus for Company D.

Around it was formed with Dallum for Captain, Benjamin Edson, first lieutenant; and Samuel J.Wilson, second lieutenant: all these officers belonged to Oquawka. B.M. Prentiss, captain of Company E from Quincy became colonel when the regiment was organized.

It was mustered into service on the April 29th by Capt. (Afterwards General) Pope. [Really no military knowledge or experience were needed to be an officer and men of varied professions assumed command of troops- some with success and some with incompetence].
