Southern Sets Graduations

Southern High School has set the date for graduation on Sunday, May 22, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. Melissa Livermore was chosen from the board to present the diplomas. Eighth grade promotion will be held at 7:00 p.m. on May 26, 2005 in the high school gym.

The Southern board approved a 5 year contract for the school farm with Darryl Lenz. This contract will be honored by the new district.

Principal Dale Buss will contact Union and inquire about co-oping track.

Principal Dale Buss reported:

• Three high school students will be taking college Internet courses the second semester
• Prom will be held at Soangetaha Country Club in Galesburg on April 23, 2005. The after prom is currently scheduled to be held at Southern High School.

Principal Jeff Nichols reported:

• Congratulations to the 8th grade girl's basketball team and coaches for placing 3rd in the state tournament.
• A book fair was hosted in December, receiving 40% of the total sales in free books. This amounted to $349.03.
• Twenty-seven students participated in the local spelling bee on January 19th. Amanda Schneider was the winner, with Kaleb Bigger placing second. They will be joined by Shelby Crawford, Phillip Kline and Jennifer McCarty-Lewis in the county spelling bee at Media on February 2nd.

In other business:

• Approved the boys baseball budget in the amount of $6,779.13
• Approved the girls softball budget in the amount of $6,354.00

The board entered closed session at 5:29 p.m. for the purpose of student discipline, closed minute review and personnel issues.

Following closed the board:

• Hired Mike Bohnenkamp as a one on one special education aide.
• Increased Shelly Morrison's hours to full time as a special education aide.
• Hired Marty Harig as track coach with no level assigned at this time.
• Disclosed July-December closed minutes.

Present were: Board members, Brad Arnold, Dan Bowman, Jon Corzatt, Doug Brooks, Rod Fox and Melissa Livermore; Superintendent Tom Avery; Secretary Sharri Richard; Principals, Dale Buss and Jeff Nichols; Guests, Paul Anderson, Bill Allaman, Melissa Wallace Jim Cole and Terri Copeland. Absent was board member Brendan Schaley.

The next board meeting will be held Monday, February 28 at 7:00 p.m.
