Moment In History

10th Illinois Infantry-Civil War: The unit went by water from Savannah to Beaufort and thence moved to Pocotaligo.

On Feb. 3rd the third brigade of Mower's (first) division, 17th Corps, crossed the Salkehatchie at River's bridge. The swamp was a mile wide and cut up with numerous channels.

The water varied from one to five feet deep and was cold. The men crossed under heavy fire and routed the rebels with the 10th losing 40 men.

On the 9th the regiment pontooned the South Edisto in face of the enemy and after dark waded nearly half a mile through a lake and struck the rebels in the flank driving them from their trenches and making several capture.

It went through South Carolina like a destroying angel reaching Fayetteville, North Carolina where it pontooned the Cape Fear River.

It bore a chief part in the battle of Bentonville and on the last day pierced the enemy's line and captured a part of Johnson' headquarter material. It stayed attached to Sherman's army until the close of the grand review in Washington.

On June 4th it moved to Louisville, Ky. where it was mustered out on July 4th. On 11th it received final payment and discharge at Chicago.
