Meet Your Neighbor: Jeanette Abernathy. Jeanette was not born and raised here, but she has been a part of this community since 1971.

Jeanette was born in Baxter, Arkansas, and when she graduated Woodlawn High School in 1955, she moved to be with her sister in Burlington, Iowa. She then later moved to Blandinsville, and then finally to La Harpe.

In 1956, Jeanette married Robert Savage. The couple had three children together, Rita of La Harpe, Ronald, of Centertown, Texas, and Rick who is now deceased.

The two were divorced in 1962, and in 1967, Jeanette married Rex Abernathy and had one son, Coy of La Harpe. Jeanette also has six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Jeanette worked for Hagger Lamps in Macomb for 31 years. After she retired, she became caretaker for Connie Williams.

She is still a caretaker to anyone in need of a little help.

She drives a couple of people to doctor appointments and just helps out when needed by anyone, whether it be appointments or stopping by their homes.

Her hobbies include, embroidery and computer games. Jeanette is a kind spirit that is grateful for her life. In 1997 she discovered that she had breast cancer, but she is happy to proclaim that she has been in remission for the last five years.
