Moment in History

10th Illinois Infantry-Civil War: In connection with the 7th cavalry, the unit dispersed Jeff Thompson's guerilla and took two guns and some provisions.

Joining Pope's army in company with the 16th Illinois, it advanced on New Madrid to within 800 yards of the rebel intrenchment and within 100 yards of the picket line, they threw up works, planted four guns and in the morning opened fire.

All day they lay in the trenches receiving the combined fire of two gunboats and Forts Thompson and Fort Pillow.

The rebels evacuated New Madrid and Gen. Pope intercepted them capturing General Mackall and 2,500 of his men.

Company E while on picket at night took 300 prisoners.

In all 6,000 prisoners, a large quantity of stores and munitions and several gunboats were captured.
