Meet Your Neighbor, Jim and Peg Tharp of rural Biggsville. Jim and Peg Tharp operate Tharp's Produce, about 1-1/4 miles east of Biggsville on the south side of U.S. 34 on their property where they truck farm. Because of this summer's severe heat they aren't offering some of the items they usually produce themselves, like cucumbers and tomatoes, but have been bringing in some of the best looking sweet corn, tomatoes and melons you'll find this season from growers near New Boston. The Tharps operate the stand from summer through October. "In September and October we bring in pumpkins, gourds and straw," Jim said. "They make for a really beautiful display." The Tharp's are open for business from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. Jim is a graduate of Westmer High School. Peg graduated high school at Union. The Tharps also sell burning barrels, with the tops cut out and cleaned, for $10. "We sell quite a few of those," Jim said. Local business is good, but because of their location along the highway, customers from Wisconsin and the Chicago area are regulars, too, Peg said. |
