If it wasn't delightful enough to be treated to a George M. Cohen musical, the weather last weekend made it more enjoyable yet as the Union music department presented "Give My Regards to Broadway" Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m
The two-act production featured singing, dancing and good clean quality humor, with students from the school's choral and band programs performing their hearts out in what was Union's final spring musical.
"Give My Regards to Broadway," set against the backdrop of the Great War, exuded the optimism of Americans in a time of financial insecurity for some and the ravages of war.
Jacob Sanning, cast as Legs Ruby-the gangster turned soft touch who is on the lam and dodging encounters with former associates who would like a word or two with him in the broom closet-kept the production moving at a good pace as a liability turned blessing in disguise.
Letta Bass, as Legs' girlfriend/chorus line hoofer/dizzy blonde complemented Sanning in an endearing sort of way.
Kaci Hurka performed solidly as the hopeful and determined Mary Collins, showing that hard work and a good self image do pay off and that persistence can result in success.
Chase Gray gave a stand-up performance in his role as Mugsy.
I was once fortunate enough to play the role of John Holliday in a re-enactment of the shoot out at the OK corral.
After the walk to the corral by the Earp brothers and Holliday, one of the other re-enactors said to me, "I watched you take that walk and I thought, "My God. He isn't playing Doc Holliday. He really thinks he is Holliday!"
I was reminded of that comment as I watched Gray in his role.
His performance truly drew the audience into early 20th Century New York City.
And Jacob Cole gave an equally convincing performance as Donald Harper, Ruby's bookie.
Thanks for the travel back in time, Mr. Gray.
Musical director for the production was Dawn Ferguson and Ann Matthews was assistant director.
