On March 31, at the United Presbyterian Church in Biggsville, some cool cats and swingin gals met for team registration night. What's all the jive talk about? The theme for this year's Relay for Life is the 50's "Rock Around the Clock".
Fourteen teams signed up at the event, but there is still room for lots more. If you would like to sign up please give Don and Peg Ingles a call at 217-449-3746 or Charlotte Shafer at 309-627-2870. The team registration fee is $25.00.
Everyone was excited to hear there are already 11 cooperate sponsors. They have donated $1,825 to date. These fine folks are: Bi-County Insurance, First State Bank of Biggsville, Winegard Company, Turnbull Funeral Home, Raritan State Bank, Twomey Company, Alexander Lumber Company, Fisher Jack and Jill, Heap Agricultural Services, Riverland FS Inc., and Security Savings Bank.
If you would like to be a corporate sponsor for this wonderful event, please call Lawrence and Alta Mae Brokaw at 309-746-6202.
Some other events planned for the near future will be waitress/waiter night at Diamond Dave's in the West Burlington Mall on May 3. Relay for Life committee members will be rockin that night for sure as they work for tips and 10% of the night's proceeds.
The committee is also selling HOPE/purple arm bracelets for $1.50 and purple ribbon antenna covers for $1.00. Ask any committee member for yours. The Henderson County Health Department will be having their ice cream/social luncheon on June 5. Watch for more details about these events and others in up-coming news releases.
Please note the date for next team captains and committee meeting has been changed from April 28 to May 5, 6:30 p.m. for team captains and 7:00 p.m. for the committee at the Stronghurst Methodist Church.
The Relay for Life event will be July 22 and 23, at the West Central School track. There will be no door to door donation solicitation by the Cancer Society in Henderson County this year which has always been separate from the Relay for Life, so this is the perfect time to make your contribution while having a great time.
The two day event is made up of fun, food, entertainment and touching moments that tug at your heart strings. The highlight of the evening on July 22, is the survivor's ceremony and the lighting of the luminaries. Whether you are in day one of treatment or treatment was fifty years ago, you are a survivor. If you would like to participate in ceremony please plan to attend. Luminaries can be purchased for $5.00 in honor or memory of someone with cancer. If you would like to purchase one or more, please call Nancy Hull at 309-627-2904.
