Dan Gillett was given the La Harpe Community Service Award for 2004. The presentation was made at the La Harpe City Council meeting Monday evening by Mayor Kenny Brown.
"Dan has given many hours to the community. His time, involvement and concern for the community are very much appreciated," Brown said.
Dan is to be commended for his active work in the La Harpe community. He has been very active as President of the Historical Society in 2004 and worked with organizations to bring the AmeriCorp group to La Harpe to aide in making city improvements.
Dan worked as a guide while the group was here. They made signs for the American Legion Hall and signs for the Lincoln Cemetery where Lincoln family members are buried. Dan continues with projects installing the signs the volunteers made.
He is also very active in the American Legion working with funerals, parades and about anything the Legion is involved in and is a Past American Legion Post Commander.
Now, Dan is working as a representative of the Historical Society to see if they can combine forces with the Golden Rule Club to answer their recent call for help with Summerfest. He recognized their dwindling membership and has offered to help with their hospitality tent, getting flea market vendors set up and other areas during Summerfest that needs assistance.
Dan said he was surprised, and he felt it was a great honor to receive the Community service award from the City of La Harpe.
