S.U. Falls to Camp Point, Now 1 and 1

By Coach Dillard

S.U's first road game for this season was in Golden, facing Camp Point Central.

What a great first half to watch. Central got the scoring started at 9:59 in the 1st quarter with a 13 yard run. The point after attempt was good making the score 7-0. With 4:37 left in the 1st quarter, Darick Clark turned an interception into 6 points with a 78 yard run. The extra point pass to Chockley was good giving S.U. the lead at 8-7.

At the 11:45 mark in the 2nd quarter, Corzatt completed a pass to Ben Jacob for a 71 yard gain. (Ben, your dad didn't think you were that fast but I knew it all along.) The extra point pass from Corzatt to Brendon Freeman made the score 16-7.

The wind went out of our sails when Central scored on an 84 yard kickoff return and made the 2 point conversion leaving S.U. with only a 1 point lead, 16-15. With 2:57 left in the 2nd, Central scored again on a 5 yard run, but the point after attempt was no good leaving the score at 16-21.

Our great fans there knew what was about to happen next. Central got greedy with under 1 minute left in the 1st half. Darick again intercepted their pass and ran it down to the 2 yard line. With 0:14 left in the half, Abe Chockley scored off the right side and the extra point - Corzatt to Freeman - was good, making the score at the half-time break 24-21.

Central dominated the 2nd half. Their first score in the 3rd quarter came on a 44 yard run, with the extra point no good. Their next score came at teh 5:04 mark in the 3rd quarter on a 4 year run followed by a 2 point conversion. Their final score was a 47 yard run and 2 point conversion at 10:16 in the 4th quarter making the final score 24-41.

The final score doesn't really indicate what a hard-fought game this was. S.U.'s young men fought hard the whole game and didn't let up at all. It was really a nice job, guys in front of a great crowd.

Friday night we'll be at home against West Prairie.

This should be a great game. Don't go by their record of 0-2 - they are a really young team. They are one of the top programs in the state year in and year out. Coach Lafferty is a great coach and friend. I know he will have them ready for Friday night. Hope to see you there.
