The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
In 1830 the trade with Indians on the Des Moines River presented a good opening for adventurous men and the Phelps Brothers procured a United States licence.
Brother William moved to Iowa establishing a trading post near Farmington while S.S.Phelps remained at Yellow Banks to hold possession of that territory.
The family experienced determined resistance from the American Fur Co. of New York and Pratt, Chouteau & Co. of St. Louis who felt that the brothers were infringing on their area.
