The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.

Moment in History

As you drive south from Illinois 116 toward Raritan, Illinois, you pass a unique picturesque barn built by Joseph S. King for $8,000 in 1877 (equals $131,961.76 in 2003 money). Mr. King was from County Monaghan, Ireland, and immigrated to the U.S. when 23 years old. He landed in New York and worked for 12 years saving his money. In 1856 he came to Henderson County and invested in farm land. Thus, was the beginning of his accumulation of 800 acres in Raritan and Media Townships. Alas, financial difficulties befell him and at the time of his death he had planned to move to Iowa.
