The S.U. football season finally started with a game against Mendon Unity on Friday night, August 27, and it couldn't have been scripted any better. The scoring started at the 6:56 mark in the 1st quarter with a 12 yard pass play from Adam Corzatt to Ben Jacobs. With 3:12 to go in the 1st quarter, Corzatt found Darick Clark open this time with a 37 yard TD pass making the score at the end of the 1st quarter S.U. 14 - Mendon Unity 0.
At 10:52 in the 2nd quarter, Corzatt went to Clark again with a 23 yard pass making the score 20-0. Mendon Unity got on the scoreboard with 6:07 left in the 2nd quarter, making the half-time score 20-6. What a great feeling that was!
While going over the strategy at the half-time break, I told the men that 20 points wasn't enough. It was a good half, but could have been better. One of the boys caught me off guard when he said, "Coach, I think that's more points than we scored all last year." I said, "That's in the past." Mother Nature took command during half-time and decided to make us wait a while to get our first S.U. victory. It might just have been the longest half-times in history.
Play resumed at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Not much happened on the muddy field until 2:51 to go in the 4th quarter. S.U. had a 4th and goal on the 18 yard line and Corzatt took off from what he did so well on Friday night, hitting Abe Chockley on a slant route at the goal line. Abe made one heck of a catch.
The final score was S.U. 26, Mendon Unity 6. This was a great effort by these young men. We appreciate the great fan support. We'll see you at Camp Point Central.
