Davis S. Brainard was born in Connecticut in 1821 and when about 4 years old his father died.

In 1838 Mr. Brainard came to Oquawka where he accompanied Mr. S.S.Phelps on his trading expedition among the Indians.

Later he worked for Col. J.B.Patterson and for a short time was a student in one of the early school taught by Rev. Stebbins.

Mr. Brainard took an active part in the Methodist Episcopal Church, having come here as a licensed exhorter.

He filled that position for many years as well as class leader and superintendent of the Sabbath School.
