The Southern Varsity Belles won their season opener with a victory over Union Monday night. This game was played at Union High School and ended in a score of 51 to 38.
Similar to the Junior Varsity game, both teams started out slow. Annie Pogue led the first half scorers with 4 points. At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied 10 to 10.
In the second quarter, Annie Pogue again led the scoring with 5 points and Darci Renken throwing in 3 points.
At the end of the half, Union led by a score of 19 to 18.
It seemed to be a pretty even match-up, but the 3rd quarter brought good things for Southern.
Southern out-scored Union 17 to 6 with Darci Renken adding 8 points to her total and Kayla Coffey pitching in with 6 points.
In the 3rd quarter the Belles took command of the rebounding. At the end of the quarter, the Belles led 35-25.
Once again, Darci Renken led the team in scoring in the second half to push her total points to 17 for the game.
The win was a hard fought victory for the Belles. To start the season, the Belles have a 1 win start. This season looks to bring good things for the final year of Belles basketball.
