Consolidation's Good For College Bound
Dear Editor,
Let me begin my note my saying how proud I am of the county passing consolidation. As a past graduate of Southern ('92) and an outsider now as I've lived away for 12 years, I watched the Committe of Ten be forward thinking and reasonable.
However, on a recent pre-election visit to Stronghurst, the local scuttle-butt did not reassure me that consolidation would pass.
Consolidation was spoken of even while I was in school. As a student, I thought it would be great! My activities had given me great opportunity to make friends at Union and it would give Advanced Placement (AP) courses which would have better prepared me for college. Entering college with no AP courses set me a step behind my peers, but I caught up with a vengance.
I'm thankful my family growing up in Henderson County will have more opportunities that consolidation will bring. I support the new district and would recommend a new name reflecting our American unity. May I suggest the Patriots?
Sincerely,

Supreme Court's Greatest Decision of "05
Dear Editor,
The US Supreme Court in 2005 will make its greatest decision by deciding if the Ten Commandments will be displayed in US Government buildings. Some states allow it and some states don't.
The Ten Commandments are a moral law for this nation. The Ten Commandments can't save you. The Ten Commandments aren't a state religion so they are legal in US government buildings.
For 215 years, the US Supreme Court has ruled on many decisions but this one about allowing the Ten Commandments to be displayed in US government buildings will be the most important in the history of the United States.
If the US Supreme Court decision is against the displaying of the Ten Commandments in US government buildings then it will fight the hand that feeds the mouth.
Just because the Ten Commandments talk about God doesn't mean it's a state religion.
What's next, the Declaration of Independence, in the Preamble and the Declaration of Rights, it talks about God. But the Declaration of Independence isn't a state religion. Will the US Supreme Court decide that the Declaration of Independence is illegal and wrong?
The US sovereignty hangs in the balance of the US Supreme Court's shoulders!

Festival Of Trees
Think Of A Favorite
Dear Editor,
As Christmas approaches, many of us are getting ready for the annual Festival of Trees at the Methodist Church in La Harpe. There are many beautiful trees and some really neat themes. I knew what mine was going to be the last day of last year's festival.
Christmas is a time of love. It is love that has inspired my tree theme for this year. My theme is "World Wrestling Entertainment."
Many people who know me have heard the story of how I started my love for the sport. I started watching when I was around 8 to 10 years old with my Grandma on Saturday nights following Saturday Night Live.
I usually had to wake her up as it came on. By half-way through the show, she was on the edge of her chair, cheering, eyes glowing.
I just bought a new DVD and it is "Hard Knocks: The Chris Benoit Story." It is an awesome double disc set. Not many movies move me but when I put it in for the first time, I had goose bumps as it started.
When it was over, I had goose bumps and tears of love and joy in my eyes.
Maybe someday if I can figure out how to contact him, I can give Chris a hug and thank him for that and many other memorable moments past and in the future.
I just hope as you see my tree you feel a bit of the love it represents and smile. I know I will. Come on out.
