Belonging to secret societies was all the rage after the Civil War and many group organized themselves into lodges.
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows organized on Oct.11, 1876 at Raritan with M. M. Field, J. C. Coulson, C. W. Hardisty, A. E. Stanley and L. W. Calhoun as charter members. The lodge transferred to Terre Haute in 1879 and was flourishing in 1882.
