Shayla Painter of Terre Haute is voting for the first time, now that her 18th birthday allows her to do so. Jean Carnes Election Judge for Terre Haute Township instructs her on putting her ballot into the new counting machine which has now been placed in all precincts. "It's nice to have a say in something," Shayla said of her first experience. Shayla's dad, Steve was also voting. Poll watcher, Dianne Lozar said a third generation, Roy Painter, age 91, had voted early in the day. Roy told the Election Judges that he had first voted in 1934 because you had to be 21 in those days. Roy was a 1931 Terre Haute High School graduate and is a life-long Terre Haute resident. Voters of Terre Haute Township were voting in the lobby of the Methodist Church's new social hall, rather than at the Terre Haute Fire Station. |
