The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
For years a wall of bricks stood sentinel west of the Ellison Bridge in Hopper (actually the Town of Warren) marking the spot of the famous Hopper Hotel. Through the courtesy of Mr. William Gullberg, Sr. the Henderson County Public Library District now has a picture of this structure. Few realize the importance it played in the early history of the county.
Towns were widely scattered and a place to mill grain was a definite magnet for farmers and townspeople alike. Hopper's Mill drew in all types and they had to have a place to stay. The hotel not only provided a bed for the night but also a hot meal as well as a meeting place for individuals and groups. In fact, would- be politicians and current legislators would court their constituency at this establishment.
As you drive down the Olena Road and through present day Hopper, reflect back on what "had been" in this remote place.
