Southern Board Still Not Convinced

by: Shirley Linder, Quill Editor

Karen Jack representing the Committee of Ten addressed Southern board members Monday evening to solicit their backing for consolidation.

Karen spoke for 45 minutes addressing the progress and recommendations the committee have achieved. She reported on the tax levy and the recommendation of PreK-8 grades remaining in each district, closing Media and high school students attending at Union. She also told the board a petition is being circulated to have the issue placed on the ballot in November. As of Friday noon, 601 signatures had been received, 355 from the Southern District and 246 from the Union District. After her presentation and answering questions she said she hoped for the board's united support, but it never came.

The Southern Booster Club will purchase a 10 x 12 shed that will be used for storing baseball equipment and Mr. Frank's class will remodel the concession stand to provide more room.

The three bids that were received for the renovation of the Pre K building, which burned recently, were turned over to the building committee. They will bring a recommendation back to the board on renovation or demolishing the building.

Bids for the bus transportation for the coming year were rejected and will be let again.

A thank you note was read from Judy Duncan.

A letter from the teachers was read requesting a meeting with representatives of the board for the purpose of beginning salary negotiations.

A letter was also read from Superintendent Jo Campbell, on behalf of the La Harpe school board requesting a meeting with the Southern board on district reorganization.
