La Harpe high School senior Levi Pfeiffer and coach Barbie Ramsey, journeyed to Knox College/Galesburg to participate in the sectional competition of WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering). Levi was one of a very elite group who had qualified to compete in this academic challenge. Only those who had gotten either first or second place in their subject areas in regional competition were invited to sectional competition.
Levi's area of expertise is chemistry. At Knox College he completed a very difficult, forty minute timed test in that area.
Following the testing and lunch, students and coaches from schools as far away as Pittsfield and Rock Island gathered to hear the results.
Although all students take the same subject area tests, only students from schools of similar size are in competition. The size divisions were our division (of enrollment up to 300), from 301 to 700, from 701 to 1500, and unlimited. The top two students in each division in each subject area will advance to state WYSE competition at the University of Illinois at Champaign during the week of April 19. Levi not only won first place in chemistry in the small school division, but his score would have easily qualified him for advancement in any of the other divisions as well. Levi had an outstanding performance.
