Bill Knobbs
La Harpe's Bill Knobbs is a familiar face around town. He was born in Fountain Green Township and attended elementary schools at Rossvile and Eldergrove.
He and his family moved to La Harpe when he was a freshman and he graduated from La Harpe High.
In the fall after graduation, he joined the United States Navy and was sent to the Great Lakes Naval Station.
He was sent to Post Office training and then worked in the Naval Post Office during his stay in the Navy.
After the Navy, he attended Western Illinois University for a year. He worked at Pioneer Lumber Company in Dallas City for two years and Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, IA, for 14 years. He then became La Harpe Postmaster for 28 years.
Bill has always lived in the La Harpe area and raised his family here also.
He and his wife Alberta (Shoemate) were married in 1948 and will celebrate their 56th anniversary this year.
They have four daughters: Betty, Susan, Rhonda, and Julie. They also have seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Bill has kept busy serving in various areas in the community. He served for 13 years on the Hancock County Housing Authority Board, on the La
Have Carnegie Library Board, ten years as a driver and EMT on the ambulance, volunteer for RSVP and currently is the van driver for the La Harpe Senior Citizens.
He is a member of the La Harpe Methodist Church and American Legion. Bill enjoys laying the piano and violin. He also enjoys playing snooker.
